Harris Teeter is opening its second store in the District today in the Capitol Hill East neighborhood. Developers hope the location, at Jenkins Row in Southeast near the Potomac Avenue Metro stop, will bolster the revitalization efforts of the community.

“Grocery stores in general are the key building-block retailers...they provide a quality of life for the urban dweller,” said Richard Lake, a principal with D.C.-based Roadside Development. Though not involved in this project, Lake is working with Harris Teeter on other locations in North Bethesda and Purcellville.

“A lot of residents were going to Pentagon City to shop,” as the Capitol Hill area hasn’t seen a new grocery store in years, Lake said. There is an older Safeway in the area, but Harris Teeter is “one of the top [grocers] in America,” Lake said, and the new store “bodes well for the revitalization of the neighborhood.”

Harris Teeter also chose the location because the space was right, said Jennifer Panetta, director of communications for the Charlotte, N.C.-based grocery chain. Elsewhere in the District, you can’t find much space, she said.

At 45,000 square feet, the new Harris Teeter is a typical size for the grocer, said Panetta. The store will be open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and will contain a pharmacy, salad bar, hot-foods bar, Asian bar, breakfast bar, floral department, chef-prepared foods and a Western Union branch.
