Jenkins Row
Open for Business

The day finally arrived – unit 469
at Jenkins Row became mine
on Sept. 20. Auspiciously, I was the
first person to move into the building.
The development is beautiful
and unlike anything else on the Hill.
As somebody who grew up here, I
never imagined having a large-scale
luxury condominium in my neighborhood,
but it was definitely worth
the long wait. The gym is as nice as
I have seen in any hotel, the courtyard
is beautiful, the views from
the roof decks are amazing and the
underground parking is a wonderful
convenience. As of today, I am the
only person in the building, and it’s
like having my own castle. That will
soon change though, as more than
230 sold units are in the process of
settlement. I’m excited to meet my
new neighbors.
The Harris Teeter is expected to
open in March, which will be a big
boost to Hill East. Most residents
in the neighborhood I have spoken
to are very excited, but the question
still remains: what about the other
retail spaces? I have heard rumors
that a coffee/wine bar will be opening
up at the corner of Pennsylvania
and Potomac, but we will have to
wait and see.
Many readers may remember
my column from a few months ago
about the importance of supporting
small business on the Hill. Rumors
have been flying about a Gap retail
store on Barracks Row, which I think
takes our neighborhood in the wrong
direction. As Jenkins Row rents the
rest of their retail space, let’s hope
that the developer, JPI, sticks with
our neighborhood’s long-standing
tradition and looks for tenants that
are independent business owners.
The building may be new, but the
neighborhood is historic. Let’s try to
preserve the character of the Hill as
best as we can.
